My childhood home was so close to the Pacific ocean that we could throw a rock from the front yard and hit the water. I didn’t live in a small town, so much as a cluster of houses outside a small town. There were a couple of gravel roads, the entrance to a series of logging trails, and a couple of small businesses. I have to say that there are a lot worse places to grow up than in rural Oregon. I loved it there until I was a teenager, at which point I started yearning to see more of the world. Soon after I moved to Portland, OR, and never traveled much further, because I never got tired of exploring the city. I will admit that Portland is not the perfect city for everyone, but it is for me! The politics here lean towards the liberal, but personally I like a multicultural approach to society, and Portland is very inclusive. The music scene, indeed the entire nightclub scene including music and comedy, is vibrant and alive in Portland, a stark contrast to the dismal weather. Portland has also become pretty famous for it’s locally grown cannabis, which is how I make my living. I started working at the cannabis dispensary for the employee discount, but somehow it turned into a career and now I run the place. Although I do miss watching the sun set over the ocean, I have to say that Portland has become my home, and I will never leave… at least not for very long.
