In the business of stand-up comedy, there are several different kinds of markets.
- A market is what we call a city, town, or region.
Some markets prefer certain styles of comedy, and over the course of doing enough shows a comic starts to get a feel for the local audience. For the most part I avoid doing comedy shows in small rural towns. For whatever reason, those people don’t usually think I’m very funny. The markets I prefer are big cities, with liberal politics and legalized cannabis. Cities like Philadelphia, PA, which is probably my favorite place in America to perform my comedy act. The people of Philadelphia love me, perhaps because a lot of my material is based on partying, drinking liquor, and smoking cannabis. Philadelphia is a city that loves cannabis, and is home to dozens of different dispensaries. At the same time, every stand-up comedian needs to tread lightly when performing in Philadelphia, because one wrong step will get you booed offstage. Seriously, you all need to be aware that the crowds in Philadelphia can be savage! I’ve seen bands, comics, even children get mercilessly heckled by the Philly audiences. This is a city that booed Santa Claus at a Philadelphia Eagles game right near Christmas. Even with their deep and abiding love of cannabis, the people of Philadelphia can turn on a performer in a heartbeat. I love this town, but at any minute the people of Philadelphia could turn on me and give me a nervous breakdown. This is why I smoke so much weed to calm my nerves before a show.
